Both me and my husband were out of work and God
wanted to know if I really trusted Him to provide for our needs.
We had three children in elementary school at the time.
One morning, I was awakened by the sound of what I
thought were cats fighting outside my bedroom window, but the sound got
louder and louder, so I got up to investigate. It was actually a bird
who was squawking louder than any bird I had ever heard. The bird and I
made eye contact and when we did, he stopped squawking and flew up to my
daughter's bedroom window and pulled a worm from out of the frame. The
bird then hovered in front of me so that I could see him and the worm
and flew off. I didn't think much of it so I got back into bed. Later
that evening at around 6:00, I heard the same squawking noise outside my
bedroom window. I looked out the window and the same bird was there.
Once again, we made eye contact and he went to the same window and
pulled another worm from the frame, flew over to where I could see him
and the worm again and then took off. The same thing happened the next
day at the same time in the morning and in the evening. The next
morning, I got my husband to look out of the window with me and he saw
how God had provided for the bird.
After the morning encounter with the bird, I
walked outside to see if I could see any worms, but all I saw was the
aluminum frame. No worms, nothing that even looked like a meal, yet I
wondered if the bird would be back that evening and if he would be
disappointed because there were no groceries in the frame for the
evening meal. I checked it myself. When it was time for the evening
meal, I waited at the window for the bird. First of all, I wanted to see
if he showed up and second, I wanted to see if there would be another
worm waiting in the frame for him. He came, squawked once to let me know
he was there and once again, when we made eye contact, he flew to the
same spot I had looked to see if there were any more groceries for the
bird, and would you believe that the bird pulled another worm from the
same frame I had closely examined to make sure there was no more worms!
Okay, God officially had my attention.
Neither my husband nor I had a job. Naturally
speaking, neither of us had any means of supporting ourselves or our
children. Yet, we had more food, our rent and utilities were paid, and
we were better off than when we were both working. We had gas for the
car and everything was just fine. When I prayed for direction, the Holy
Spirit said to wait. I waited just as I was told. After about two
months, I received a phone call from a lady who offered me the best job
I had ever had at that time. During the two months of joblessness, my
family lacked nothing. God had provided for us supernaturally just as He
had provided for the bird.
Through my extraordinary encounter with a bird who
faithfully obeyed God's instruction to get my attention I now have
learned a lesson that will remain with me for a lifetime. The scripture
in Matthew 6:25-27 has been painted on the canvas of my heart and mind.
It reads, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry
about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what
you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more
important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or
reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they?"
